The Cloud may seem difficult to understand at first, but in truth, it works the same way as a traditional computer framework does. Both need physical devices to create invisible, digital structures between different computers and other devices. With the Cloud, however, one can access the same information on the Internet. Below are the four different types of Cloud computing services, from the broadest category to the most specialized.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
The infrastructure is the foundation of a computer network. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a totally virtualized version of computer architecture. It does require an IaaS manager to oversee physical machinery like data centers, servers, etc., remotely, but otherwise, a company can implement any type of software they need to develop its online operations. It is completely scalable, so companies only have to pay for what they use. It’s a great tool for small businesses and startups who do not have the in-house resources to manage the infrastructure.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a service that allows companies to not only obtain software, but to develop it as well. It gives them a platform on which to build, test, deploy, manage, and update software products. PaaS is fantastic for companies that create and sell online applications and programs, since it offers development tools that would be otherwise very expensive to purchase on their own. With Internet access, employees can use all the same tools at once.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
The last part of the three main types of Cloud computing services, Software as a Service (SaaS) is the most specific. It is software that is already fully-built and ready for companies or individuals to use. Because they typically run directly through the web, businesses don’t have to download software and don’t have the bulk of the software management. A couple of examples of SaaS include e-commerce sites and Google apps.
Function as a Service (FaaS)
Function as a Service (FaaS) works with a different emphasis from the other three Cloud computing services. While the others are infrastructure-based, FaaS is code-based and works based on events and requests as a pay-as-you-go system. It is a subset of serverless architecture, in that the Cloud provider automatically manages a business’s physical hardware, web server software, and virtual software.
