Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E: The Main Difference

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E: The Main Difference

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are up and coming; here’s what to expect.

Technology is ever growing and expanding, which could not be truer than for Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are at the forefront of the world’s next greatest technological advancements, but it is just the beginning. Here is what the world might look forward to in the next few years.

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi is a technology that allows multiple devices to communicate with one another through radio frequencies. Wi-Fi 6 is the newest and largest version of Wi-Fi, in which traffic has more room, so to speak, to flow without becoming congested. Wi-Fi 6 and previous generations work through the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands. Wi-Fi 6E refers to devices that can work not only on those radio bands but also on the 6 GHz band, the newest radio band approved for Wi-Fi usage. In short, Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 technology over 6 GHz. This technology allows for more channels that will not overlap which translates to more speed.

Expectations for Wi-Fi 6E

It is yet the early days of both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E; in fact, most of the world is still waiting for them to be free for public application. In October 2018, 6 GHz was already ready for Wi-Fi use. However, regulatory agencies, which manage these proceedings, did not allow it to go forward at the time. In the meantime, Wi-Fi 6E technology developed further. At last, on April 23, 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to allow 6GHz to open later this year, so Wi-Fi 6E devices are now able to launch in the U.S. It is still a matter of time before it becomes available globally.

Availability

Wi-Fi 6 devices are already available in stores, and Wi-Fi 6E devices are expected to come quickly on the scene once 6GHz is open for unlicensed use. Because there is no date for its release, one still remains uncertain about how soon it really will become prevalent throughout this and next year.

Even so, one will be able to use Wi-Fi 6E devices without the need for 6GHz. However, if you aim to use 6 GHz, you will need Wi-Fi 6E devices such as laptops, phones, routers, and access points.
